The Holburne Ensemble return this spring to the Museum, this time in the form of a piano quartet. They present a programme of charming gems from the 18th century including a performance of Mozart's effervescent quartet in Eb major K.493. The repertoire is centred around the beautiful Schantz fortepiano, about which Haydn could not praise higher, famously saying “…everything is better expressed on a Schantz.” Artistic director of the ensemble, Nathaniel Mander, will therefore perform one of Haydn's sonatas written with this instrument in mind.
